The Ford EcoSport isn't coming to the U.S. anytime soon Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president of global marketing, said this week. The subcompact crossover will, however, be sold in 62 countries by 2017, The Detroit News reports.

Farley added that those plans could change if demand for subcompact crossovers increases in the U.S. Until then, though, the Fiesta-based EcoSport will be sold in developing and growing markets such as India and Brazil. While the EcoSport is part of Ford's One Ford plan, it will offer unique engines for certain markets. Most buyers can choose from a 1.0-liter EcoBoost I-3 or 1.6-liter TDCI diesel, Brazilian market models will offer a pair of naturally aspirated four-cyliner engines in 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter sizes.

While the mainstream subcompact crossover segment in the U.S. is comprised of just the turbocharged Nissan Juke and Buick Encore, a Honda Fit-based Twist crossover is heading to Brazil and a different Fit-based crossover is likely heading to the U.S. Chevrolet has even hinted at bringing a bow-tie version of the Encore to the U.S. With fuel prices above $4 a gallon in some areas and urban areas highly congested, the subcompact crossover segment has potential for growth.
