Sport/utility vehicles are not generally thought of as being the fastest machines on the road, with extra weight and unfavorable aerodynamics working against them. But those conventional barriers are easily overcome with the addition of good old fashioned horsepower, and plenty of it. In the case of the 2013 Range Rover, a drop in curb weight of over 500 pounds helped the cause considerably as well.

So, although a $100,000-plus British luxury SUV may not seem the first choice to go picking stoplight drag fights, it more than has your back if your mischievous streak comes out. In recent Motor Trend testing, the 2013 Range Rover Supercharged zoomed to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and tripped the quarter mile in just 13.1 seconds at 108.3 mph. Admittedly, that doesn't make it the absolute king of speed among SUVs, with the BMW X5 M, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo all doing those benchmark speed tests a tick faster.

It still puts the blown Rover ahead of some legitimate performance hardware, such as the Nissan 370Z, which does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, and the BMW 335i, which does it in 4.7. It also pulls ahead of its old-school German counterpart, the G63 AMG, which manages the on-ramp sprint in a still-respectable 5 seconds flat. Check out our full chart of performance stats of some of the cars and SUVs we've tested recently to see how the 2013 Range Rover Supercharged stacks up.
