The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is barely showing up in dealer showrooms, and already the aftermarket is all over it like cubicle drones on free donuts. We've already reported on development underway by Callaway on high-performance supercharger systems for Chevy's bread-and-butter hauler, and it was only natural that renowned GM tuning specialist Lingenfelter Performance would be hard at work on its own Midwestern flavor of hot-rod pickup.
With development well along on a supercharger for the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8, Lingenfelter's development mule, a 2014 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 4WD with a rather tall 3.07 axle ratio, ran an impressive 13.89-second quarter-mile at Muncie (Ind.) Dragway, with a trap speed of 100.07 mph. To put that in perspective, our recent test of a similarly-configured 2014 Sierra 1500 (even with the same axle ratio) without forced induction ran a 15.7-second quarter at 89 mph. Nearly two full seconds and 11 mph is no chump change. And you can bet with further tuning, those times will drop more.
As was the case with the Vortec 5300 and LS-based Gen-IV small-block V-8s, the EcoTec3 family shares a lot of components and architecture with the C7 Corvette's LT1 direct-injected 6.2-liter V-8, and Lingenfelter is well-known for its Corvette tuning expertise as well, so expect some happy cross-pollination between the two development programs in the years ahead.
