Although it's never played in the same league as the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape in sales volume, the Hyundai Tucson has always represented a good value in the compact crossover segment, and its 2010 model-year redesign made it attractive choice in the segment. The 2014 Hyundai Tucson brings some detail changes to Hyundai's smallest SUV to make it more competitive with its peers.
Like most of the rest of the Hyundai lineup, the 2014 Tucson finally gets gasoline direct-injected engines for the 2014 model year, including both the base 2.0-liter in the GLS, as well as the 2.4-liter in the SE and Limited models. Although the updated engines are a positive development, for fans of row-it-yourself transmissions, 2014 brings the discontinuation of the five-speed manual transmission on the GLS model. All 2014 Tucsons have a mandatory six-speed automatic transmission.
The addition of GDI to the 2.0 and 2.4-liter engines bring modest power and economy gains, with the 2.0 having the same 164 hp as last year's port-injected engine, with torque getting a slight bump to 151 lb-ft from 146 lb-ft. City fuel economy on the 2.0 goes up 1 mpg to 23, and highway fuel economy remains unchanged at 29 mpg. For the 2.4, horsepower goes up 6 to 182 from 176, and torque goes up 9 lb-ft from 168 to 177 lb-ft. It appears highway fuel economy for the 2.4 actually declines by 2 mpg from 30 to 28 mpg on the 2014 model. The city figure remains unchanged on the 2.4 at 21 mpg. All 2014 Tucsons also get Sachs amplitude-selective dampers for improved ride quality.
Aside from the underhood changes, all 2014 Tucsons get standard Bluetooth hands-free calling, a standard tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, and standard steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. The headlights get a projector-beam design with LED accents, and LED wraparound taillights are optional.
Models equipped with the optional navigation headunit get HD radio, and SE and Limited models get a standard 4.3-inch color touchscreen audio system with a rearview camera. Limited models also get dual front temperature controls for 2014. Pricing has not yet been announced. The 2014 Tucson will be available in dealerships this fall.
