Those of you who follow developments in the heavy truck sector probably remember Navistar's initial resistance to the trend of selective catalyst reduction urea aftertreatment, instead sticking to an EGR-only solution to meeting tightening heavy truck emissions standards. The company found it increasingly difficult to meet those standards with its EGR-only technology, and started a transition to engines using SCR in December 2012. Now with the availability of the Cummins ISX15 engine in the International LoneStar Class 8 truck, the transition is complete.
The company's Class 8 SCR transition began with the International ProStar equipped with the Cummins ISX15 in December 2012, later offering the ProStar with its own MaxxForce 13 engine. Although Navistar engineers and manufactures its own line of engines in the MaxxForce line, the popularity of the Cummins is outpacing that of the MaxxForce engine by a nearly two-to-one margin in the Class 8 segment. The ISX15 is available in power ratings from 500 hp and 1850 lb-ft of torque up to 550 hp and 2250 lb-ft. The LoneStar truck is also available with a choice of a 10-, 13-, or 18-speed Eaton manual transmission or an Eaton UltraShift Plus 13- or 18-speed automated manual.
