We've seen spyshots of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD
for the better part of the past year, and even under the cladding, it was apparent that the trucks would largely follow the styling direction set by their half-ton brethren. Now that the sheets have been officially pulled off GM's big bruisers, reality largely meets expectations, with styling largely mirroring that of the recently introduced Silverado and Sierra 1500
Whether that's a good or bad thing hinges largely on your opinion of the 2014 half-ton restyle. Some thought GM was too conservative with the refresh, with the Sierra and Silverado showing a strong family resemblance to their predecessors. The differences become more apparent when the 2013 and 2014 models are parked side by side, but they will not likely be mistaken for another brand's truck.
Like the half-ton models, the HD truck shave a more chiseled, aggressive front-end appearance, accentuated further on the HD models with a large lower front bumper and a solid strip bisecting the high and low beam lights on the Silverado HD, and a larger, bolder grille on the GMC that cuts down into the front bumper. Added eye candy on the GMC are LED running-light strips on the top and bottom of the headlights. Both HDs get foglights mounted slightly higher in the bumpers, and the lights go from a rectangular to a round design on the Silverado. A styling detail we like on the models equipped with the optional Duramax diesel are the raised chrome lettering on the hood dome edge.
The interiors of the 2015 HD models, much like the half-tons, are bolder and more modern and functional than their predecessors. The touchscreen display moves up on the dash for improved visibility, and the climate vents move from the top of the display to the sides. The seat heating and cooling controls also get broken out onto their own clusters flanking the climate controls, which go from buttons to knobs with digital temperature displays. The 2015 models add dual optional front 12v and AC accessory power outlets. The trailer brake controller also gets a much more prominent placement on the dash from the lower to the upper dash, just above the light and 4WD controls. The Driver Information Center also gets a major update from the 16-bit-looking monochrome LCD display to a full-color dynamic LED display.
Although the fundamental hardware under the trucks hasn't changed substantially, with the 6.0-liter Vortec gas V-8 and LML Duramax diesel V-8 carrying over unchanged. But the styling changes inside and out make GM's workhorses a worthwhile update over last year's models. What do you think?
