The 2014 Dodge Journey doesn't receive any seismic changes. There's no direct-injected, turbocharged, MultiAir engine option, no nine-speed transmission, and no swoopy, sleek new bodywork. The big news for 2014 is a new Limited model replacing the Crew trim, and SiriusXM satellite radio being available across the Journey lineup, even on the base AVP model.
Powertrains are carryover from 2013, with the 173-hp and 166-lb-ft 2.4-liter DOHC I-4 soldiering on bolted to an antiquated four-speed automatic transmission. This dated combination betrays its age with a mediocre 26 mpg highway. Sacrificing only one mpg, but adding 110 hp and 94 lb-ft of torque is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, which is mated to a six-speed transmission. A few years ago, six cogs seemed state-of-the-art, but with Chrysler's 9-speed about to roll out in the 2014 Cherokee and other models, this combination is also starting to look stale.
With a starting price of just $20,490 including destination, the Journey holds the distinction of being the lowest-priced seven-passenger crossover sold in the U.S. Standard equipment includes keyless entry and start, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, power windows and locks, power heated and fold-away mirrors, and a standard 4.3-inch Uconnect touchscreen radio.
If the entry model is too bare for your tastes, numerous packages are available on the different trim levels, combining various options in packages to suit almost any taste. For example, the popular Blacktop package, which continues on the 2014 Journey SXT, includes 19-inch alloy wheels along with black headlamp bezels, exterior mirrors and fascia. Models with the top-of-the-line 8.4-inch Uconnect navigation system get voice command. All models are available with an optional built-in Uconnect Web by Mopar WiFi hot spot.
New colors for 2014 include Black Clear Coat, Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coat and Redline Red 2 Pearl Coat.
