When Hyundai and some other manufacturers began offering 100,000-mile powertrain warranties, it was an unprecedented vote of confidence in the reliability of their vehicles and was instrumental in changing consumers’ perceptions of the value-oriented Korean brand. But Nissan is going a step further and introducing an unprecedented 5-year, 100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper basic warranty on its commercial vehicles, the NV fullsize cargo and passenger vans, and the NV200 compact cargo van.

If this seems like a big risk for Nissan and warranty payouts, don't tell Above and Beyond Delivery services in Chandler, Arizona. In just three years, the specialized delivery fleet has put more than 500,000 miles on one of its vans, surpassing even Nissan's own internal durability testing on an individual vehicle. The only major non-maintenance repair on the vehicle in that time was replacing the alternator at 382,000 miles. Nissan identified Above and Beyond for its unusually high-mileage use and asked to inspect the high-mile van. The company has been very pleased with the durability and low maintenance of the vans and is planning on replacing its entire light-duty delivery fleet with NVs in the next few years.

Phil O'Connor, Nissan's director and chief marketing manager for trucks, SUVs, crossovers, and commercial trucks, explained the strategy in rolling out the class-leading coverage. "We think for our brand, it's a game-changer. It's a big statement in our belief in the reliability of our commercial vehicles. We know they're durable, and we know durability and cost-of-ownership is really important to customers in this space. Being the new "new kids" in the commercial vehicle segment, we needed a tangible way to demonstrate that we have a compelling durability case to make with our products. This is the best commercial van warranty in the industry."

For comparison, Mercedes-Benz offers a 5-year, 100,000-mile powertrain and outer-body warranty on the Sprinter, with a 3-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty, and Ford offers a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty with a 3-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.
