The Volvo XC90 is another example of a vehicle that was a trendsetter when it debuted, but after more than a decade in the marketplace fundamentally unchanged, it started to look and feel a little dated. Well, that won't be the case much longer, with the 2015 XC90 set to raise the bar substantially in the luxury crossover class once again. Sitting atop the new XC90 model hierarchy is the T8 Twin Engine model, Volvo-speak for plug-in hybrid. Combining the motive force of the twin-charged 2.0L I-4 and an 80hp electric motor driving the rear wheels, total system output is a healthy 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque.
In addition to the T8, there will be two non-hybrid gas and two non-hybrid diesel options offered on the new XC90 in Europe. The T6 model gets the twin-charged 2.0L without hybrid assist with an output of 320 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, and the T5 gets a turbocharged I-4 with 254 hp and 258 lb-ft. The D5 diesel model gets a twin-turbocharged engine with 225 hp and 347 lb-ft, and the D4 has 190 hp and 295 lb-ft. The XC90 is the first production Volvo based on the company's new SPA (scalable product architecture) platform, which will underpin future Volvo models. Expect the T8 and T6 models at launch for the U.S. market. Volvo's diesel plans for the U.S. are not yet clear. The 2015 Volvo XC90 will debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October.
