There are a lot of groundbreaking innovations on the 2015 Ford F-150, not the least of which is its groundbreaking use of aluminum -- the first in the segment -- and by far the largest-volume application of sheet aluminum in the auto industry. But that’s far from the only innovation on the new truck. Another area where the 2015 F-150 is breaking new ground is in its horizontal sliding rear-window design.
Sliding rear truck windows are typically made up of three panes of glass embedded into a multi-piece frame and mechanism. The rear slider on the 2015 F-150 consists of only two pieces of glass, with a single continuous outer piece of glass and a second sliding piece behind it. Not only does the design look sleek and futuristic, but it also is simpler to install in the assembly process and is lighter than the more conventional three-pane slider used in most fullsize trucks.
Although the new opening appears at first glance to be smaller than the opening on the outgoing F-150, it is actually the same size as the outgoing model’s three-piece design. The rear-window design on the 2015 Ford F-150 was a collaboration between Ford Motor Company and Magna International, one of the leading Tier 1 suppliers in the automotive industry.
