Let's be honest. Not a lot of guys buy HD trucks if they're never going to use the utility offered by their higher payload and towing capacities. Granted, some of the vehicles are purchased for the bragging rights and hot-rodding potential of their diesel engines, but the majority of HD trucks are bought to tow and haul. So what better complement to an HD truck than a piece of heavy equipment?
That's exactly what Ram Trucks and Case Industrial Equipment thought when they were working on the special-edition 580 Super N Wide Track backhoe loader. The spiffed-up tractor is making its debut at the Conexpo-Con/AGG 2014 show in Las Vegas. We've never been to this trade show, but it sounds something like the farmer's SEMA show.
The 580 gets a two-tone black-and-gold paint job matching the color scheme offered on the Ram Laramie Longhorn. In addition to the exterior paint scheme, the tractor gets a specially trimmed interior that also features inspiration from the Ram Laramie Longhorn.
Both the Ram Laramie Longhorn HD and the Case 580 feature turbocharged diesel engines, but the truck has a substantial edge on the tractor, with 385 hp and 850 lb-ft from its 6.7-liter Cummins I-6, compared with the tractor's 95 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque. But whereas the Ram can easily top 80 mph loaded or unloaded, the Case has a top speed of just 28.9 mph, ironically achieved in reverse. And if you're talking power-to-weight ratio, once again the Ram wins, with the tractor coming in at a crushing 19,985 pounds powered by its 3.4-liter four-cylinder.
