Hundreds of millions and sometimes billions of dollars go into development of an all-new product, and companies hope that it finds a warm reception among the buying public and the media alike. For the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, it seems it has succeeded on one of those fronts, but fallen short on the other, at least for Consumer Reports. The new CUV, which has been selling strongly in its first few months on the market, even surpassing the iconic Wrangler, failed to make the publication's "recommended" cut.
Among the areas that Consumer Reports cited as issues were its nine-speed automatic transmission, which reviewers called "clunky and uncoordinated." The base 2.4-liter TigerShark I-4 was also criticized for being "rough, slow and overworked." Higher marks were given to the optional 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6, but getting a description of "mostly better" hardly comes across as a robust accolade.
Although the vehicle did not make CR's recommended list, reviewers did cite some positive attributes of the new Cherokee, including its class-leading off-road capability and 4500-pound towing capacity with the V-6.
In response, Chrysler countered to Reuters that the model has been selling well, and has received positive reviews from other automotive media outlets, as well as consumers.
