The annual Wörthersee festival in Austria is typically a celebration of the original hot hatch, the Volkswagen Golf GTI, and its variants from VWAG's other brands, including Skoda, Seat, and other Golf-based vehicles. But lately, VW has been using the venue as a showcase for some of its other vehicles, including the not-for-U.S. Amarok pickup. VW tempted us last year with the 3.0L TDI V-6-powered Amarok R-Style truck, a modern-day European interpretation of the sport truck. VW reprises the sport truck concept again at the 2014 festival with the Volkswagen Amarok Power concept.
Like the R-Style, the Power concept packs a 3.0L TDI V-6 under the hood matched to an eight-speed automatic, producing 268 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. But the Amarok Power concept was actually built to party, with a full DJ station built in to modular storage boxes in the bed that house an Allen & Heath Xone:92 sound board, Pioneer CDJ-900 mixing station, MC2 amps, Void Acoustics Impulse 3t speakers, and a Stasys Xair subwoofer.
All of these components are designed to fit neatly and perfectly in the Amarok's bed with custom-fit storage boxes. Other details giving the Amarok Power concept the appropriate attitude are 295/35-22 wheels and tires, orange accents, orange brake calipers, bi-xenon headlights, and custom upholstery featuring a honeycomb perforation pattern and Alcantara accent trim on the seats, door panels, and steering wheel. The Amarok is probably not coming to the U.S. anytime soon, making anything along the lines of the R-Style or Power concept an even greater long-shot. But, we can certainly admire it from a distance.
