Behind the Scenes: 2003 Truck of the Year

Trackside for TOY testing
From the December, 2002 issue of Truck Trend

Through our two other Behind the Scenes articles this year, we showed the MT editors evaluating SUVs in the dirt and flogging cars on twisty canyon roads, with breaks for note taking and tire kicking. Taking a different direction for the trucks, we're offering a peek at our track days.

Although it is the third and final award issued each year, the Truck of the Year evaluation process is no less grueling. In fact, in addition to the standard roster of performance testing, comparison driving, and real-world experience, TOY requires diligent assessment of the competing pickups' work abilities. Take a look here behind the scenes as the road test crew lead by Chris Walton and Neil Chirico do the heavy lifting (both literally and figuratively) in preparation for the back-to-back comparison drives that eventually lead to the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty being named Motor Trend's the 2003 Truck of the Year.

Look for complete coverage of the competition and winner in the February 2003 issue of Motor Trend magazine.
