Let's peek behind the scenes at Truck Trend magazine.

We had a Pontiac Aztek in our long-term fleet for a year. With its screaming yellow paint and gray cladding, my manhood was called into question on two separate occasions by passing motorists. While shooting the Aztek by a shallow stream, some mud found its way into the vehicle's crevices. After a day, a foul odor greeted whomever drove it. It quickly earned the name "AZZtek."

The best photo of the late, great John Lingenfelter was taken by former TT editor Mike Magda for a shoot on his six-second Silverado. His confident pose and beaming smile are the result of a life well-lived. RIP.

The Baja 500 has been good to Kia--except when I was there. While I was co-driver in Darren Skilton's Sportage, we managed to get stuck in the sand and blew the torque converter at the 50-mile mark. We were stranded on the back side of a blind curve. While Darren looked at the trans, I ran up the course and diverted traffic--right over his helmet sitting on the side of the road. D'oh! Driveline help didn't arrive in time and Kia had a DNF.

Staffers' and photographers' children regularly appear in the magazine. While shooting a Sportsmobile at a campground in Angeles National Forest, a group of campers came to check out the rig. When asked if these were my kids I replied, "Naw, I picked 'em up at a rest area about 10 miles back." There was a sudden eerie hush along with some very shocked expressions. "Hey, I'm kidding!"

We had to push Fox Television off the Irwindale Raceway to get these shots. McQ was filming the pilot for the short-lived action series "Fastlane." Many expended .45 caliber shell casings littered the track's infield and several were picked up in the Toyota's sponge-like tires. The guys at the tire repair shop weren't sure what to say and didn't press us for a tip.

During a seminar about what sells magazines, Truck Trend was lambasted at length by the then-editorial director for using a composite image to show three diesel pickups. Truck Trend had the last laugh when the sales numbers showed it to be the best-selling issue of the year and the third-highest to date. If you drive a desk, talk about desks. If you drive a truck...

Speaking of women...at least one of the young ladies gracing the "Crew Cab Crazy" cover now hosts her own porn Web site. But remember, she's also someone's daughter.
