There is perhaps no more iconic and well-recognized name in travel trailers than Airstream. While other companies change the shape and exterior graphics of their models from year to year, Airstreams have always been noted for their understated elegance and simplicity. The unadorned aluminum exteriors of the brand-new models look little different than those produced decades ago. But just because the timeless design has not changed dramatically on the outside doesn't mean the company doesn't continue to innovate.
First shown as a concept at an RV show in November 2012, as a collaboration among Airstream, Officina Italiana Design, and Technoform S.p.a., the Airstream Land Yacht has now been officially announced for series production, beginning in July 2013. The shape and features of the production model are nearly identical to the concept, including boat-deck flooring, LED panel lighting, Corian solid-surface countertops, and a hidden galley kitchen. The 28-foot travel trailer has sleeping accommodations for five people, a bathroom amidships, and a rear social area.
Pricing has not yet been announced, but considering Airstream's current 28-foot trailers range from $80-100,000, figure the exclusive Land Yacht to fetch well into the six figures when it finally arrives.
