Trucks With the Biggest Cabs

Which has the most legroom? The answer might surprise you!

Jun 4, 2020
One of the biggest differentiators between pickups that's seldom talked about is cab space. We've gotten to a point in history where nearly all trucks have enormous interiors, some of which feel downright cavernous. This is a great thing, as more space is better all around. For some brands this has meant increasing overall length and wheelbase; for others, the additional cab room has come at the cost of bed length. Either way, front- and rear-seat occupants are appreciative.
By simply analyzing the data provided by the manufacturers regarding interior space, we can come to some quick and basic conclusions about interior size. A few notes first, however. Stated legroom is an SAE standard measurement and is quoted at the max. Meaning, you will likely not have the maximum front and rear legroom at the same time (seat design variances will affect this). Also, all manufacturers provide hip and shoulder space, as well; however some do not calculate total passenger volume. And for this exercise we stuck exclusively with four-door pickups, while excluding single- and extended-cab models.
Most interesting among our findings is that across the board for 2020, GM has cabs with the most front seat head- and legroom. This is true of midsize, -ton, and HD models for both Chevrolet and GMC. Also noteworthy is that Ram's fabled Mega Cab provides less front headroom, front legroom, and rear legroom than any truck in the HD class.
What follows is a breakdown by class of interior specifications as provided by the manufacturers. Best-in-class figures are highlighted in bold, and vehicles are listed in descending order by amount of front seat legroom. Many factors other than interior dimensions will affect individual comfort, and we always recommend sitting in every vehicle in the class you're looking at prior to purchase.

Midsize Trucks With the Most Cab Space

As the most robust pickup segment with six available models, midsize trucks are more competitive than ever. Those looking for the most front-seat head- and legroom will want to steer toward the Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon, while those looking for rear head- and legroom might check out the Jeep Gladiator (though rear ingress is more difficult than the competition). Those looking for a wide cab should steer toward Honda's Ridgeline, as it has the most front seat shoulder and hip space. It's worth noting, the Jeep Gladiator specs are quoted for hardtop models; switching to a soft top provides nearly 2 extra inches of headroom.

-Ton Trucks

In the -ton segment it's once again the GM offerings with the most front-seat head- and legroom. The Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 best the competition by more than 2 inches of headroom and more than an inch of legroom. Ford's F-150 provides the most front shoulder space and rear seat headroom, while the Ram 1500 provides the most front-seat hip room and rear-seat legroom.

HD 3/4- & 1-Ton Trucks

Chevrolet, GMC, and Ford all share a common cab between their -ton and HD products for 2020. Meaning, GM once again provides the most front-seat leg- and headroom. Ford's Super Duty pickups offer the most rear-seat leg- and headroom, along with front shoulder room. While Ram's 2020 HD trucks are technically all new, they carry over cab dimensions from the previous generation. Still, they offer the most front-seat hip room.
Interestingly, both Ford and GM trucks best Ram's Mega Cab in rear-seat legroom. However, what they lack is the enormous amount of space behind the rear seat. So, if you'd rather have the near foot of extra cargo storage, the Mega Cab is for you.
