Caught! 2017 Ford Super Duty
Direct Injection for Gas Engine, 10-Speed Auto Expected
Now that the heavy lifting has been done on the development of the 2015 F-150, Ford is turning its attention to the F-Series Super Duty trucks, with the new models due to roll into showrooms sometime in 2016 as 2017 models. Styling is expected to be an evolution of the current model and will likely resemble a scaled-up 2015 F-150, which itself took some inspiration from the current Super Duty. The dual-outlet tailpipes on this mule suggest it's the diesel model. Ford just announced the output figures of the 2015 Power Stroke as a colossal 440 hp and 860 lb-ft of torque, so it's likely the redesigned Super Duty will maintain that power level, although a further power bump to an even more ludicrous level of power is possible (470 hp, 900 lb-ft?).
As with most HD trucks, the limiting factor on output is the transmission, and, on that note, it's possible the redesigned Super Duty could get a heavy-duty version of the new 10-speed automatic that Ford and General Motors are jointly developing for rear-drive applications. The 10-speed transmission may be limited to the gas model, due to its lower torque output. In regard to the base 6.2-liter gas V-8, that engine may get direct-injection to improve power and fuel economy and make it more competitive with rivals' gas engines, such as Chrysler's 6.4-liter Hemi in the Ram HD models. The gas engine in the 2015 GM HD models is still the carryover 6.0-liter Vortec, but could adopt a version of the new EcoTec3 V-8 in the near future.
As always, expect incrementally higher towing and payload ratings, as well as enhancements to towing and stability systems. Although not definitive, the horizontal opening on the wrap around the bed could indicate Ford may offer some built-in storage compartments on the outside of the bed as an option, similar to those on the Ram Box concept. Aftermarket utility beds with exterior storage compartments have been offered for the Super Duty for quite a while, but this would be the first time they would be offered as a factory-installed option.
