Volkswagen's Race Touareg Spotted Testing in the Swiss Alps
It's competed well in off-road races, rallies, and competitions around the world, amassing 13 victories, 39 podiums, and over 100 stage victories since 2004. Now, there's a new Volkswagen Race Touareg on the block.
Currently known as the Volkswagen Race Touareg 2, the race-prepped VW won this year's Dakar Rally back in January and, apparently, a future incarnation had been testing in the still-snowy Swiss Alps, sans sponsor livery and decals. Our spy photographer snapped away, and from the exterior shots and single interior photo, this spied racing Touareg looks little different from what is currently used in the works Volkswagen team.
Motivation for the current Race Touareg 2 is attained from a 2.5-liter turbo-diesel inline-five engine developing close to 300 horsepower and matched to a five-speed sequential transmission, which would benefit from the rather large transmission cooler behind the front grille, as pictured. Don't expect to see a Race Touareg roaming our streets but you can get yourself into a refreshed 2011 Touareg.
