Spied! Single-Cab Volkswagen Amarok Seen Testing On the Nurburgring

You may think the Nurburgring is home to supercars and the like, but it's really a non-denominational racetrack. Witness its latest client, a Volkswagen Amarok single-cab prototype out for a test.
The last time we spied this truck, it was in considerably less friendly, albeit more truck-like, territory, in the snowy northern regions of Europe. As noted in the past, this unannounced single-cab version of the truck is believed to be a workhorse version and as such not as well equipped. In fact, our sources are now saying that the single-cab may not even get the "Highline" trim that the more upscale four-door Amarok will get as a top trim-level.

Though more blue-collar purpose, the single-cab Amarok isn't expected to lose any capability to the four-door. Our sources suggest it will offer the same two 2.0-liter turbodiesel engines, one with 120 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque and the other with 158 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Both will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission feeding either the rear wheels or all four wheels via an all-wheel drive system that can send up to 60 percent of the power rearwards.

So far, the Amarok is only planned for the South American and European markets, in that order. The company has reportedly investigated a U.S. market model, but has yet to pull the trigger. The four-door Amarok is expected to go on-sale in South America early next year with European sales following shortly thereafter. This single-cab model is expected to debut soon after the four-door model.
