Caught! 2015 Subaru Outback

New Model Leaner, Sleeker, Turbo H-4 Could Return

Jul 9, 2013
The Subaru Outback has consistently been one of the brand's best-sellers in the U.S. Although its styling and packaging suggest "wagon," it has skillfully avoided that stigma among buyers with its high ground clearance and outdoorsy image suggesting SUV. With the fifth-generation Legacy/Outback first debuting for the 2010 model year, the car is coming up on the traditional 5-year product cycle, and it appears the arrival of a new 2015 Subaru Outback is imminent.

Compared with the somewhat chunky, high-beltline styling of the current fifth-gen model, the sixth-gen Outback looks leaner and slimmer, with proportionally more glass area. Overall dimensions are unknown, but visually, the sixth-gen Outback appears slightly smaller than its predecessor. Of most potential interest to enthusiasts is the possible return of a turbocharged boxer H-4, in the form of the Forester XT's 2.0 direct-injection turbo, probably making around the same 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, although the Outback may get a slight power bump over the Forester. The 2.5-liter naturally aspirated H-4 is expected to carry over as the base engine. The 3.6-liter flat-six may be discontinued with the addition of the turbo boxer to the lineup in the interest of fuel economy. Production of the new model is projected to start in summer 2014, and the production version, or a thinly disguised "concept" may debut at the 2014 Detroit auto show.
