Caught! 2014 Nissan Rogue Ups the Style Factor
Strong-Selling Compact SUV Gets Extreme Makeover
The Nissan Rogue has been somewhat of an enigma in the compact SUV class. Receiving only incremental updates since its 2008 introduction, it has remained Nissan's best-selling SUV model, as well as being a strong-selling model in the compact SUV class overall, despite much newer, fresher competitors. But the Rogue may be the outcast no longer with the imminent introduction of the 2014 model, which Nissan itself has confirmed. These spy shots sent in by Motor Trend readers Jerry and Ginny Healy show a much crisper, assertive form compared with the current Rogue's shrunken last-gen Murano look.
Elements of the current Pathfinder are apparent in Nissan's signature "twin strut" grille design, and rear side windows. The taillights show a Lexus RX influence, but for a good idea of what the production model will probably look like, look no further than the Hi-Cross concept that debuted at the 2012 Geneva motor show. Take away some of the bright bits, the 21-inch wheels, and the sci-fi interior details, and you've got a pretty good idea of what the new Rogue will look like.
Underhood, we're expecting a revised version of the current QR25DE 2.5-liter I-4 to serve duty mated exclusively to a continuously variable automatic. The Hi-Cross featured a supercharged 2.0-liter I-4 with a hybrid drivetrain. While this powertrain combo may make an appearance down the road, we're expecting the new Rogue to launch with the 2.5 and CVT. But just because displacement and transmission look carryover at first glance, don't assume there are no changes. The current Rogue trails the class leaders in fuel economy, so we expect some significant improvements in mpg on the 2014 over the current model. Look for the covers to come off the production 2014 Rogue at the Los Angeles auto show in November, if not sooner.
