Oh Snap! 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Striptease Continues
Tahoe-Like Grille on GM's Midsize "Life-Style" Truck
In an indication we're drawing closer to the official debut of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize trucks, we just got these photos of late-stage testers with less camo than we've seen in weeks and months past. Fairly clear through the grille mesh is the Colorado's Tahoe-like inverted-trapezoid grille. The placement of the headlights appears to mirror the location on the global Colorado, with the grille being the main styling differentiator between the U.S.-spec and global models.
This particular model is an extended-cab, and we've also seen crew-cab variants testing. Although the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra have gone to front-hinged doors on the extended-cab models, it's unknown whether the midsizers will follow suit. Although GM has been mum on specifics, they have stressed that the Colorado and Canyon will be positioned differently in the marketplace, with the Colorado being the "life-style" truck, and the Canyon having a more commercial orientation.
Two engines are a given for the new twins, a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter I-4 as the base engine and GM's 3.6-liter twin-cam V-6 as the upgrade engine. Two options still up in the air at this point are a 2.0-liter gasoline turbo, and a version of the global 2.8-liter Duramax I-4 diesel. Transmission options are also unconfirmed, but likely include a six-speed automatic, possibly standard. A manual transmission may or may not be offered, and possibly only with the base-model four-cylinder.
Production is scheduled to begin in early calendar 2014 at GM's Wentzville, Missouri plant, where the trucks will be built alongside the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans. The production versions of the trucks may be shown at the 2014 Detroit auto show.
