Next-Gen Hauler Shows F-150 Influences

The K2XX Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra were new for the 2014 model year. General Motors traditionally had a seven to 10-year model cycle on its previous-generation trucks, but with competition heating up in the space, that model cycle has been shortened to just five years. An all-new Silverado and Sierra are expected for 2019, at least for the 1/2-ton models, with the HDs likely to follow a year later. We have shots of what are believed to be the next-generation “T1XC” trucks.
Initially, we thought we were looking at a heavily cladded Ford F-150, thrown off by the front window cut-down, long a Ford trademark. However, closer inspection reveals GM’s signature squarish wheel wells and indentations beneath the cladding covering the rear bumper showing GM’s bumper corner steps, a popular class-exclusive feature. Peeking through the wheel wells, it’s clear that this model has rear leaf springs, a setup used almost universally throughout the class with the exception of Ram.

The most interesting developments could be coming under the hood. With Ford announcing a diesel V-6 option for the F-150 for 2018 and Ram offering the 1500 EcoDiesel since 2014, GM is now the sole holdout in the Detroit 1/2-ton diesel club. Considering how bullish the company is on diesels lately with the Cruze diesel and the new Equinox and Terrain, we’re confident a six-cylinder diesel will be offered on the next-gen Silverado at some point.
GM was very close to offering a 4.5L Duramax diesel V-8 for the 1/2-ton trucks just prior to the company’s bankruptcy. While this engine is still a possibility, emissions and fuel economy regulations have since tightened, making us think a V-6 is a more likely possibility. For higher-trim models, a version of the DOHC 6.2L V-8 rumored for the C8 Corvette is a possibility. This would mark a radical departure from convention for GM, which has stuck with the OHV setup for its small-block V-8s for more than six decades. The 10-speed automatic co-developed with Ford is expected for some, if not most, 1500 models. We expect the 2019 Silverado to be unveiled at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.
