Late last month, we brought you spyshots of what is believed to be the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 testing. The wrapping and cladding was designed to give the onlooker the impression that the truck was a Ford F-150. The beltline cut-down on the camouflage wrap is a signature feature of the F-Series. However, close proximity to General Motors facilities and other vehicles leads us to believe we’re looking at the next-generation Silverado. Here, we see the truck winter testing. Among the cues more visible this time around are dual-exit exhaust tips, more frontal LED lighting, and beefy, prominent grab handles on the A-pillar. Six-lug wheels indicate it is the 1500 1/2-ton model, which will be the first to debut.
Beyond external appearances, little is known for certain about the next-gen Silvy. There’s a strong chance the new jointly developed 10-speed automatic with Ford will see service in the truck. Indications are than an evolution of the current fifth-generation small-block V-8 will continue service. The bread-and-butter displacement of 5.3L will likely retain the traditional OHV “cam-in-block” configuration. GM is believed to be working on a dual-overhead-cam 6.2L V-8 for use in the future Corvette and possible high-performance Camaro variants. Top-trim trucks and SUVs such as the Denali, High Country, and Escalade may also receive a version of this engine eventually. However, the big question everyone wants to know if there will be a 1/2-ton diesel? With Both Ford and Ram fielding 3.0L V-6 diesels in their light-duty fullsizers, will GM follow suit?
