Caught! Global 2012 Chevrolet Colorado

From the December, 2010 issue of Truck Trend

This is a right-hand-drive prototype of the future Colorado, expected to go on sale in markets outside of the U.S. by late 2011, but not here or in Canada. We expect the U.S. version of the Colorado to cease production by 2010, but overseas, it's a different story: GM doesn't plan to shutter its Chevy Colorado production facility in Rayong, Thailand. The company recently received $445 million in loans to expand the plant for the next-gen Colorado, code named GMI-700, and to produce four-cylinder diesel engines. The truck shown is an extended cab model. It appears to be a bit larger than the current Thai Colorado, which has also shared its GMT355 platform with the Isuzu D-Max. The nose seems to share some front-end styling with the Chevy Equinox crossover. GM and Isuzu are not expected to share components after the new truck arrives. The two companies parted ways after GM sold its ownership stake in Isuzu in 2006. The new Colorado -- also known as the S-10 In Brazil -- will compete against the upcoming T6 Ford Ranger, new Volkswagen Amarok, and existing models from Mitsubishi, Toyota, and Nissan.

The U.S. manufacturers continue to shoot themselves in the foot.  First Ford, and now GM, have decided the U.S./Canada market does not need compact trucks.  Fine, I'll just buy Toyota, Nissan, or the Fiat-controlled company, Chrysler, who does plan to bring out a replacement for the Dakota.  Ford thinks a new Ranger would cannibalize the F150.  Well, let the U.S. auto industry wither while other countries offer what North Americans want.

The problem with the current Colorado is ridiculous pricing, lack of refinement, and awful MPG.

If GM were to create a well developed, efficient, and much less expensive replacement, Colorado sales would boom.
Think: Chevy Luv.

Back in the 80's when we were given a choice of products in this market, names like S-10 and Ranger became part of the auto language, and they made a great reputation for themselves.  Sadly, with their popularity came increasing sizes, features, and prices.  Current offerings are no longer worth the price when compared to their full-sized siblings.  Their replacements have only convinced us to buy their larger brothers.
Why not give us something that offers a real choice?  Leave out the toys of the big rigs and give us something worth the money in reliability and performance! I'll take mine in a regular cab, short bed 4WD with a diesel or V6.
