Motor Trend subscriber Ken Cates of Shreveport, Louisiana, snapped these photos of what appear to be an updated Mercedes-Benz GL SUV while on vacation in Foley, Alabama, near the Gulf Coast. The GL also happens to be manufactured in Tuscaloosa, a little over 200 miles north of where these photos were taken. Could the 2013 GL quality-assurance team have decided a little Gulf Coast road trip was in order?

Although Cates speculated this could be an AMG version, we're inclined to believe it's "just" a regular GL. He points out the 21-inch wheels as possibly signifying a performance trim, however, the GL 550 is also offered with 21-inch rims currently. AMG models typically sport quad-tip exhausts, whereas this model clearly has dual rectangular outlets. Most likely, it's packing Mercedes' twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8 in GL 550 trim, or the updated turbodiesel V-6 from the ML with 240 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. Either way, it's clear the styling changes will bring the GL more in line with the rest of Mercedes' recently updated lineup, most notably the new ML and just-unveiled 2013 GLK.
