Motor Trend's ace shooter Michael Shaffer caught these two Range Rovers testing at Germany's famed Nuerburgring. Although the two models appear similar at first, a closer inspection reveals slightly different proportions, suggesting that one may be the 'regular' Range Rover, and the other the slightly smaller Sport model.

Spy shots of both models have been popping up more frequently and we already know that there will be some big changes in store. First off, the new models are expected to be lighter than their predecessors by as much as 800-1100 pounds. There's also a possibility that a supercharged V-6 could replace the naturally-aspirated V-8 as the base engine as a concession to tougher fuel economy requirements. Additionally, eight-speed automatic transmissions are expected for the entire range.

Currently, European versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are offered with V-6 and V-8 diesel engines in addition to the gasoline powerplants. It's unknown whether the U.S. will get these options when the 2014 model hits our shores, but the chances look better than in years past.

Finally, although retaining much of the Range Rover's signature upright styling, headlight and taillight details are expected to be influenced by the stylish Range Rover Evoque. The new models are expected in showrooms in the first quarter of 2013, making an official debut at either the Paris or Los Angeles auto shows a possibility.

Land Rover could build an "overtly sporty" variation of the Range Rover Evoque, but does the brand really need such a vehicle? Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern told Auto Express that the company is considering developing a new model called the Evoque Sport.
