In the December ’10 editor’s column titled: Hybrid Power Stroke Injectors, we clued you in on the future power plan for our ’97 Ford F-350 crew cab. With the groundwork laid for supporting bigger horsepower in the form of an Adrenaline high-pressure oil pump, electric fuel system, and a higher-flowing turbocharger, we’re ready to make our ’97 Ford F-350 perform better.
Photo 2/21   |   In this photo you can see the hardware required for the first portion of this build:238cc, 80-percent-larger-nozzle Stage 3 hybrid injectors from Unlimited Diesel Performance, ARP head studs, and oe head gaskets and injector sleevesfrom Rodeo Ford. Head studs are not an absolute necessity with Hybrids, but just know that if you do blow a head gasket, you'll be pulling the heads and preforming all the labor included in this article.
As many of you know, modifying an older diesel often forces us to address or replace worn-out, aged parts. We at Diesel Power aren’t above these inconveniences, which is why we’ll be performing some preventative maintenance along the way for utmost peace of mind once the project is finished. With help from the Power Stroke experts at Flynn’s Shop in Alexander, Illinois, we’ll be replacing our injector sleeves and rusting exhaust up-pipes, adding head studs, and installing a bulletproof automatic transmission.
We begin this month with Part 1 of our build, which includes the install of injector sleeves, head studs, and hybrid injectors. Stay tuned, because in the next three months you’ll see why hybrid injectors are the new craze for 7.3L owners. For the finale, we’ll be taking the truck back to the dyno and comparing our new numbers to our previous ones. We’ll also show you some detailed flow charts to help further explain the benefits of running hybrid injectors in your 7.3L Power Stroke.

Intercooler System Reinforcement
Because our turbo will be living in the 35-to-40-psi range with the hybrids, Flynn upgraded the intercooler system with T-bolt clamps and this reinforcement bracket. It’s an upside-down T-bracket that was secured to the block via two vacant mounting pad holes (which are accessible with the factory fuel bowl reservoir deleted). Up top, the bracket was secured to the Y-inlet by welding a bolt onto it. The idea here is to keep the 2-inch Y-inlet pipes from blowing off the intake manifold inlets (something we experienced in the past).
