Mud tires work great in the snow, dirt, and well -- in the mud, too. Highway tires are great on-road, but that’s about it. All-terrains are generally the middle ground between the two. But what if you need something a bit more aggressive than an all-terrain to get to your favorite campsite? Pro Comp’s new Xtreme MT2 Radial Tire is an off-road proven tire available with an 80psi, E-load rating, making it the perfect fit for Overlanders and the like.
The folks at Pro Comp are extremely happy with their new MT2 tire, so we thought we’d give them a shot and see what all the hype was about.
Early Testing Results:
First impressions of the Pro Comp Extreme MT2s, on the street were great. Surprisingly, the MT2s acted the same when hooked to our 8,000-pound Carson Trailer (inflated to 75psi), as they did sans trailer (inflated to 55psi).
The first thing we noticed was how much smoother the ride was versus the ATs. Not something we were expecting at all from a mud terrain. Control in the corners at high speed (45mph and up on a closed course) was really no different outside a healthy amount of tire squeal. During normal every day driving, taking corners felt no different than with the ATs.
One thing we found and really liked: Whether towing or not, these tires stop on a dime! We’re used to the ABS kicking in during panic stops, but now there’s not even the slightest hint of the ABS activating. These tires just grab the pavement and don’t let go. With trailer in tow, stepping very hard on the brakes, the MT2s emitted a kind of angry growl as they helped bring all 18,000 pounds to a halt right quick. It made us smile and let out more than a few, Tim-Allen-type grunts.
We’ll be putting these new Pro Comp shoes to a true on- and off-road test during this year’s desert season in the Southwestern United States.
