Tire Testing Gets Dirty - Rubber Meets (Off-)Road - Updated with more tires!

If there were one part of a pickup that is customized more often than any other it would be tires. Nothing makes a bigger statement, changes the looks as dramatically, or alters performance as easily as swapping out the rolling stock. Factory tires provide a compromise between long life on the highway, performance in all conditions, and value for the automaker. For some truck owners, this is perfectly acceptable, and replacing worn tires is as easy as heading to the local dealer’s service department. For the rest of us, our mission is to dump the factory junk as quick as possible and slap on a set of purpose-built tires.
A truck owner will often choose off-road tires to compliment the rugged nature of their pickup. Today’s 1/2 and 3/4-ton trucks can accept a factory-sized off-road tire with no modifications, and most will fit up to a 35-inch tire with little more than a leveling kit. With this in mind, we set out to take a look at four tires that are new to the market, which you’ll find in the coming pages. We’ll also look back at four that we have been testing over the past year to see how they’ve held up over time. In addition, since pickups are built to tow, we’ve been putting miles on a set of rugged trailer tires that are up to the task of hauling where the pavement ends. Lastly, with winter upon us, we take a look at why snow tires are important. So come along and let’s get dirty!
