The 2015 Land Rover LR4 straddles the middle ground between the opulence of the Range Rover line and the practicality and versatility of models such as the recently introduced Discovery Sport. The LR4, which was formerly known as the LR3 and before that as the Discovery, will likely be wearing that designation once again, as its successor will be the second member of the Discovery family, following in the footsteps of the Discovery Sport. Few specifics are known about its successor, but count on the 3.0L supercharged V-6 and eight-speed automatic carrying on, and more modern styling reminiscent of the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque. The LR4 is comfortable and capable, but efficient, it’s not. Even with the change from the 5.0L V-8 to the 3.0L supercharged V-6, fuel economy went from horrible to merely bad. If you’re a fan of the LR4’s chunky, angular styling and off-road capabilities, then you won’t be disappointed. But if most of your driving will be on-road, there are many other midsize SUVs and crossovers that offer similar day-to-day practicality with significantly better fuel economy—at a lower cost.

Truck Trend's 2012 Best In Class: Luxury SUV - Towing More Than 3500 Pounds

Premium Style With Functionality

The Editors of Truck Trend
Mar 13, 2012
Winner: Land Rover LR4
Runner-Up: Mercedes-Benz M-Class
We still love the Land Rover LR4. This sport/utility is boxy and heavy, yet its 5.0-liter V-8 means the vehicle is really fast. In addition, it is a monster off-road, has a comfortable interior, and is genuinely luxurious. It offers room for seven in its vaultlike cabin, and can tow more than 7700 pounds. The only thing that could make it better would be a diesel engine. For that, you can look to the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, which also offers a hybrid and a high-performance model.
