2011 Spring Fling Show - Web Exclusive Bonus
It’s All About Family
The space on these pages is usually filled with a slick and positive review of the Spring Fling Car & Truck Show in Panama City Beach, Florida, but this year I want to tell you a little more. I want to tell you about how a show that’s always been held to help fund local charities went a step further this year and gave back in a way that touched a LOT of people. Now don’t think it was just the guys and gals at Vital Signs Street Designs that made the difference, it was each and every person that supported the show this year whether by being a vendor, showing their ride, or just showing up.
Not long after arriving on Saturday morning I ran into an old friend who handed me a flyer. This flyer wasn’t telling me about some cool new show I haven’t been to yet or even an old favorite that was just around the corner, it was about a person. This person’s name is Lilie Brewer, daughter of fellow truck enthusiasts Lucky & Julie Brewer. Little Lilie was diagnosed with multiple heart defects at two months of age and my friend was selling armbands to help raise money for the family as well as take any donations. This struck me pretty hard because I was in the same situation as a child and know how rough it can be.
As the weekend and the show rolled on I noticed more and more people wearing the red armbands which really made me feel good about this ‘family’ of friends I’ve made over the years going to these events. Then came Sunday and a HUGE announcement. As the other photographers and I were gathered on the stage for the afternoon’s events, the crew from Vital Signs announced they had decided to donate all proceeds from this year’s event to Lilie’s family to help with medical costs. That in itself was a great thing to hear, but even more amazing was the flood of donations that came to the stage immediately following that announcement. It was truly, for me, one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen happen in all my years of covering these shows.
So with that said I want to praise the Vital Signs crew for not only putting on another great event, but also for doing their part to make a difference. And I especially want to thank each and everyone that contributed to Lilie’s fight, because you have reminded us that it’s not all about some cool trophy or whether your truck shows up in a magazine, it’s about friends.
