Truck Wheels - Positive Offset
How Much Bigger Can We Go?
In your hands is our annual wheel and tire issue that includes one of the most comprehensive buyers' guides ever produced. That ardent task fell to Brandon Gillogly, or "new guy" as we affectionately call him around the office. Although, he has been with us for well over a year. Maybe we should drop the nickname. Nah. What fun would that be?
Anyway, when looking through the guide Brandan had put together, I came across a set of 30-inch wheels. Yes, you read that correctly. Who in the world will ever put a set of '30s on a vehicle? The only thing these wheels will actually fit on is a Hummer H2, due to its massive by large wheel opening. But even then, it would have to be fit with rubber-band sized tires. I just can't see it. Also, I can't see the need, want, nor the desire for an offroad wheel measuring 24x10 inches, which is fit with tiny little 38-inch offroad tires. Yes, they fit. Yes, people are purchasing them. And yes, we have featured trucks dressed in them. But again, my personal opinion is offroad tires need some sidewall to be affective. They just simply look funny on a big lifted truck that must be lifted to extremes to clear 38-inch tall tires in the first place.
A truck lifted on '38s and '24s looks almost like a donk vehicle. If you have no idea what a donk vehicle is, picture a mid-80's Chevy Caprice on '26s or larger wheels. There are suspension lift companies out there that literally cannot keep Chevy S-10 lift kits in stock because so many people are bolting them onto these Chevy Sedans. In a word: dumb. But again, that is my personal opinion.
Throw in the fact that after you somehow find a way to fit 30-inch wheels and tires on your Hummer H2, there will be extra strain applied to the factory braking system. We have addressed this problem in this issue, as well. Only, in our case, the truck had a 6-inch lift and was dressed in '35s and '20s-a normal proportionally correct lift kit with wheels and tires. The stopping decreases presented by this new BIG brake kit were unbelievable.
Now that I have ranted enough about inordinately large wheels, please read the issue. There are quite literally wheels for every budget, every size, and for every configuration possible. So, enjoy.
