Feature Files - Photo Location - Number 4
Not long ago I heard criticism from a reader that was tired of seeing features photographed in the desert, on a lakebed, or by a beach, lake, or river. There's a reason why we pick the photo locations we do, and it's simple. We want to show the vehicle in its best light, literally and figuratively. The locations we keep going back to have open light from the horizon, minimal obstructions that might cause unwanted reflections, and enough room to get plenty of angles even with our long lenses. That means places without buildings, dumpsters, power lines, tall trees, and traffic. Take away all of those things and you've got deserts, lakebeds, rivers, and beaches.
Our philosophy, when it comes to features, is that it isn't about some cool location, and it's not about posing a model in a bikini all over the bodywork. It's about showing readers what's possible when it comes to customizing trucks and giving truck owners and the shops responsible a little bit of the limelight. We try not to have anything that's distracting your attention away from the truck. That said, we do occasionally try new things when it comes to locations and we have shot features in urban areas and at night, although it can limit our options when it comes to photography.
It's not possible to please all of the readers when it comes to our feature photography, that much is obvious. However, that doesn't mean we're not open to suggestions. If you really like the way a feature looks, let us know. If you guys have something that you'd like to see more of, or less of, let us know about that too, and we'll see what we can do. Or we'll ignore it, no promises.
