Ford is celebrating the news that its new rear inflatable seat belts, available in the 2011 Explorer, have won the 2011 Traffic Safety Achievement Award at the New York International Auto Show’s World Traffic Safety Symposium. The rear seat belts, optional on the Explorer, inflate on front and side impacts, providing five times the surface area to dissipate the energy of a crash over a larger area while more effectively keeping occupants in a proper seating position, reducing the risk of injury.

Now for some not-so-good airbag news. Ford has expanded a recall to include more than 1.3 million ’04-’06 F-150s for wiring that could cause inadvertent driver-side airbag deployment. Ford says that no accidents have occurred as a result of the problem, but several vehicles have had the airbag deploy after wires inside the steering wheel have chafed enough to allow contact.
