Popularity (and Price) of Vintage SUVs on the Rise
Old-School Utes Fetching New School Prices, Hagerty Says
We could have filed the news that vintage SUVs are growing in popularity under the “tell us something we don’t know” department, because we’re obviously big fans of old-school utes around here. But it’s always nice to know the rest of the world is starting to pay attention, too.
According to the folks at Hagerty Insurance, host of the largest database of classic cars in the world, this trend has been building for the past five years. Prior to that, a cool old Bronco or Suburban rolling across the auction block was looked at as a novelty, or even a bastard stepchild. But during this year’s auction season in Scottsdale, eleven early Toyota Land Cruisers were sold alone, including one that went for 88k!
Hagerty says this niche market is growing about twice as fast as the overall classic car market. Maybe it’s due in part to retro-themed revival vehicles like the Toyota FJ Cruiser or more likely the overall popularity of SUVs in general, but these old classics have definitely begun to catch the eye of collectors. Land Cruisers have shown the biggest spikes, with CJ series Jeeps, Ford Broncos, and International Scouts not far behind.
"With so many young collectors opting for modern SUVs as their daily drivers, we're seeing a shift in perception of what makes a vehicle cool," says head honcho McKeel Hagerty, "Broncos, Land Rovers and other similar vehicles from the '60s and '70s were, for the most part, once seen as utilitarian. But vintage SUVs are becoming more and more collectible, and it appears that trend will continue. This is a great time to get into this segment of the collector car market."
This is good news for those of us that Hagerty Insurance reports Huge Increase in Popularity (and price) of Vintage SUVs already own a classic SUV. And for the rest of us, it sounds like right now may be a great time to buy! www.hagerty.com
