1985 Ford Ranger Turbo Diesel: Wheels & Tires
Priorities. Just like a house needs a good roof before the interior gets an upgrade, a truck needs a good set of tires before the interior, exterior, or engine get an upgrade. Our 1985 turbo diesel Ford Ranger that we drove home from Kansas to California did so on a worn out set of tires. It wasn’t that the tires were out of tread, per say. It was more the dry rot, deep cracks in the tread that caused the greatest concern. Plus, with the history of the tires unknown, there could have been other issues just out of sight. The smart thing would have been to change the tires in Kansas before the 1700 mile road trip home, but that didn’t really occur to us until after the road trip. Thankfully, the weathered Goodyear tires caused no issues on the trip home, but, knowing that such a thing should not be taken for granted, we limited further miles until our new 31x10.5R15 BFGoodrich AT tires could be mated to 15x7-inch Mickey Thompson Classic III Black rims. The finished product, now bolted securely to the mini truck, bring style, safety, and a touch of custom to our new project mini diesel. Next priority – finish the radiator and install glow plugs.
