General Motors announced today that the EcoTec3 6.2-liter V-8 offered in the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LTZ or High Country and GMC Sierra SLT or Denali, has been SAE-certified at 420 horsepower (at 5600 rpm) and 460 lb.-ft. of torque (at 4100 rpm). Impressive indeed! With this rating certification, the Silverado and Sierra will have the most torque of any light duty pickup and tout the most power of any pickup engine.

The EcoTec3 6.2-liter V-8 features a trio of technologies to aid power, torque and fuel efficiency: Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation), direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve timing. The other two EcoTec3 engines – the 4.3L V-6 (285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque) and 5.3L V-8 (355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque) – feature this trio as well. These qualities will aid in fuel economy, which has recently been released for the 6.2-liter: 15 city / 21 hwy (2WD) and 14 city / 20 hwy (4WD). The engine is set to launch later this year.

Also noteworthy is the 12.000 pound maximum available trailering capacity of the 6.2L when properly equipped. An optional Max Trailering Package for 2WD and 4WD V-8 crew cab and double cab models include an integrated trailer brake controller, 9.75-inch rear axle with 3.73 ratio, automatic locking rear differential, enhanced cooling, seven-pin and four-pin connector, and more.

It’s (apparently) all about numbers, so for now, GM can wear the crown and brag. But they should wear the crown modestly and brag humbly, as other auto makers are sure to take note of GM’s accomplishments and stand within single-digit striking distance of GM’s horsepower numbers.
