Let the accolades of this 1957 Chevrolet short bed pickup truck owned by Alan Beers of Owasso, Oklahoma, do all the speaking. First off, this classic truck masterpiece is a 2013 Great 8 Ridler Award Finalist. It is also the Goodguys 2013 LMC Truck Parts Truck of the Year-Late winner. This stunning success for Jason and Jim Smith of the Hot Rod Garage has been five years in the making – five years well worth the wait for its debut in March at the Detroit Autorama where it became an instant hit as a Ridler Contender.
Don Ridler, the man behind the Ridler Award, was the first professional promoter and publicist of the Detroit Autorama Show in 1957. His creativity and professionalism resulted in huge growth for the show. Upon his early death at the age of 54 in 1963, it was decided that an award, geared to honor new creations, would be established in his name in 1964. Today, the award emphasizes creativity, engineering, and workmanship. Vehicles making their first public showing at the Detroit Autorama and which are minimally operable may qualify for this most prestigious hot rod award. The fiercely competitive field, narrowed down to eight finalists during Autorama, make up the Pirelli Tire Great 8 Finalists. A Ridler Contender is essentially an immaculate, amazing, beautiful, one-off masterpiece of a vehicle. It is essentially different from its “custom” counterparts in that it is truly custom. In a sea of custom vehicles, you’d arguably be able to pick out a Ridler Great 8 Finalist.
Just over half a year later, the winning streak continued when the ’57 was recognized by the Goodguys award selection committee in Columbus for the 2013 Truck of the Year-Late Award. Don’t be fooled by the silver paint – this ’57 has an affinity for gold.
