2014 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Contender: Toyota Tundra
We were surprised when we saw that the changes Toyota made to the 2014 Tundra really only amounted to a refresh considering the second-generation was introduced back in 2007. While many expected a new model, the Japanese automaker gave its full-size truck a number of meaningful enhancements, but will those be enough for the Tundra to impress the judges as the truck did in 2000 and 2008 Motor Trend Truck of the Year competitions?
The Tundra soldiers on with the same 270-hp 4.0-liter V-6, 310-hp 4.6-liter V-8, and 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 powertrains, with the V-6 still mated to a five-speed automatic, and the V-8s using the six-speed autos. But at the top of the lineup is a new 1794 Edition model that boasts extra niceties to attract luxury truck buyers. Extra attention has also been paid to the Tundra's interior, with a better layout and additional available premium options. As for performance, the Tundra's suspension has also been slightly retuned.
Though the automaker addressed all of our prior complaints about the truck with this refresh, not much helps it stand out among its competitors. Will a well-rounded performance catapult the Tundra ahead of the other contenders?
