2014 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Contender: Mercedes Sprinter
With a choice of body styles, heights, lengths, and turbodiesel engines the 2014 Sprinter is the Mercedes-Benz of vans. But is the high build quality and interior comfortable enough for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to earn the 2014 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Golden Calipers?
The Sprinter is available with 144- and 170-inch wheelbase, and as a chassis cab, cargo van, crew van, a passenger van, and a minbus. Chassis cab models come with a standard roof while the mini bus comes only with the high roof. Other body styles are available with either roof height. Customers can choose from two turbodiesel engines: the new base 2.1-liter four-cylinder is rated 161 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.0-liter V-6 is rated 188 hp and 325 lb-ft.
Where the Sprinter’s TOTY performance falters is value -- With a choice of body styles, heights, lengths, and turbodiesel engines the 2014 Sprinter is the as a Mercedes-Benz, the Sprinter is more expensive than other full-size workhorse vans. There were also complaints of wind noise and a rough ride when unladen. Could that stop the van from winning Truck of the Year honors, or does the Sprinter have what it takes to win it all?
