2014 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Contender: Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
Bringing a diesel powerplant to the light-duty truck segment has been a dream of enthusiasts for years, and for the 2014 model year, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has arrived to meet that demand. Powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 with 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel uses an eight-speed automatic. Sure, the Ram is a highly anticipated release, but does it have what it takes to be the 2014 Motor Trend Truck of the Year?
Though EPA fuel economy ratings have not yet been announced, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel might soon become the most fuel efficient truck available in the U.S. And with a maximum towing rating of 9200 pounds, the diesel V-6 falls between the 3.6-liter model (7450 pounds) and the 5.7-liter V-8 (10,450 pounds). As with its V-6 and V-8 counterparts, the EcoDiesel model will be available from an entry-level Tradesman to the high-end Laramie Limited trim.

So the diesel-powered Ram can't tow as much as the V-8 model, but for the extra efficiency and range, the automaker charges a premium. With a base price of $30,180, the EcoDiesel model is thousands more than the base-trim 5.7-liter V-8. Could that drawback -- and the lower towing rating compared to the V-8 model -- keep it from winning Truck of the Year honors?
