New Diesel Cars

Maybe you’ve seen it, maybe you haven’t, but Audi has a great new commercial out called “The Station.” The commercial depicts a lady pulling up to the diesel pump to refuel her A8 TDI, drawing the attention from onlookers in the vicinity. As people take notice, the whole world goes into slow motion as everyone from a delivery guy to the nearby cops yell, “Nooooooo!!!” At the end of the spot, the station attendant says, “Hey lady! That’s diesel!” The woman calmly looks up and says, “I know.”
It’s a creative take on how many of us who have recently switched over to diesel cars have felt at one time or another at the fuel station, and a great way to draw attention to the benefits of the latest crop of diesels. I know it has happened to me on several occasions, where someone saw our long-term VW Passat TDI pull up to the diesel pump and got nervous when I reached for the green nozzle. The beauty, however, is that people are starting to catch on, and I have had many a conversation at the pump with folks wanting to know my thoughts and impressions of a clean diesel car.
It’s been a great experience educating people who have never before considered a diesel vehicle, and seeing them walk away armed with new information and a desire for further research. After several months of living with a new clean diesel car, I can tell you that the fun-to-drive nature of the engine, exceptional fuel economy, and butt-busting range will never get old. On a recent 900-mile round trip, our Passat achieved a tank of 45 mpg, and we weren’t even trying. That equates to a range of more than 800 miles and far surpasses the car’s official EPA rating of 40 mpg on the highway. Try doing that in your hybrid with the cruise control set at 75 to 80 mph.
With this sort of range, I have discovered that I am now liberated from the exits I am used to pulling off at in a gasoline car. No longer being tied to range means I can get off on my schedule, explore different exits and restaurants, and take breaks independent of the car. It’s a great benefit to have this freedom while out on the open road.
If you are in the market for a new car, I highly recommend you look at some of the amazing diesel offerings that are available today. I think you would be impressed with how far diesel has come and how comparable it is to just about any equivalent gas car being sold today.
