Audi’s Second-Generation 3.0L V-6 - Torque

Less Weight, More Power, Higher Fuel Economy

For 2014, Audi has introduced four new TDI models for the United States: the A6, A7, A8, and Q5, along with an updated Q7—and all of these models come equipped with the company’s second-generation 3.0L V-6 diesel engine. This new mill delivers higher horsepower and torque, lower fuel consumption, fewer emissions, and an all-around smoother and quieter operation than the outgoing first-generation engine.
Weight Savings
Shedding 55 pounds over the first-generation engine was no easy task. To accomplish this, Audi engineers redesigned almost every aspect of the engine. A new block provided the greatest amount of weight savings by shaving off an astonishing 14.3 pounds. The Gen2 crankshaft weighs in at 4.4 pounds less than its predecessor, and a new main bearing frame and upper oil pan—which is now made of magnesium instead of aluminum—combine for 7.3 of the pounds lost. Switching from a four-chain timing system to two chains dropped 8.8 pounds, as well as reducing power-robbing friction. And a new turbocharger and exhaust manifolds further reduced the engine’s weight by 2.2 pounds, while redesigned cylinder heads and camshafts contributed 6.6 pounds to the diet program.
Increased Power
Recipients of the second-generation engine benefit from an increase of 15 hp and 22 lb-ft of torque compared to the outgoing powerplant. To achieve this, a new variable-geometry turbocharger, optimized for better torque application at low speeds, was sourced from Garrett. The complete air circulation system has been improved from the air filter to the turbocharger, redesigned for minimum pressure loss and reduced turbulence. A new intercooler and piping have been fitted on the pressure side, resulting in improved throttle response. Providing the fuel for combustion are six eight-hole, piezo-inline injectors that are fed a constant supply of fuel by way of a high-pressure Bosch CP4.2 pump, which delivers up to 29,000 psi of injection pressure. The piezo injectors deliver two pilot and three post injections for every injection event to reduce noise, vibration, and emissions.
