450,000 Ford Vehicles Recalled, Includes Escape
Ford has issued two major recalls that together involve about 450,000 models. One recall involves a rust issue on certain older Escape models. The second recall involves the Ford C-Max, Fusion, current-generation Escape, and Lincoln MKZ for an issue with the seatback assembly.
2001-2004 Ford Escape
The Problem: A potential subframe corrosion issue in certain Ford Escapes may cause the lower control arm to separate. This could result in loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. Ford says it's aware of one crash related to the issue, but no injuries.
The Fix: Dealers will install a reinforcement crossbrace.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall affects 348,804 Escape crossovers in the U.S.; 36,799 in Canada; 13 in Mexico; and 146 in federalized territories for a total of 385,762 vehicles. This recall focuses on certain Ford Escapes originally sold or currently registered in states located in the Salt Belt region. The potentially affected vehicles include 2001-2004 Escapes built in Kansas between October 22, 1999 and December 19, 2003; and 2004 Escapes built in Ohio between May 1, 2003 and January 23, 2004.
2013-2014 Ford Fusion, Escape, C-Max, Lincoln MKZ
The Problem: The driver and passenger seatback assemblies in certain 2013-2014 Ford vehicles were put together with welds that don't comply with one of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regulations. Improperly assembled seatbacks could increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
The Fix: Dealers will replace seatback frames and other parts on potentially affected vehicles.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: Approximately 48,960 2013-2014 Ford vehicles in North America including Canada and Mexico have been recalled for this issue. Affected models include 17,183 Ford Fusions built between August 15, 2012 and September 10, 2013; 26,539 Ford Escapes built between June 5, 2012 and August 12, 2013; 3948 Ford C-Max hatchbacks manufactured between July 23, 2012 and May 28, 2013; and 1290 Lincoln MKZs.
