Cadillac Ditches Plan for Large Three-Row Crossover

Erick AyapanaMay 28, 2014
Cadillac is dropping plans to build a large crossover. News about the possible three-row, unibody Cadillac crossover first surfaced late last year, but a report by WardsAuto suggests that General Motors executives fear that it may cannibalize sales of the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia.
The automaker originally considered expanding the Escalade nameplate into its own family of vehicles, with the new three-row crossover spearheading the effort. "I'd like to explore the notion of other vehicles that would carry that brand name," said Bob Ferguson, senior vice president of global Cadillac, last October.
Moreover, larger crossovers are starting to make less sense due to increasingly stricter U.S. fuel efficiency regulations and Cadillac’s desire to expand in other markets that typically favor smaller vehicles.
For now, Cadillac’s SUV lineup continues with the five-passenger SRX and the truck-based 2015 Escalade and Escalade ESV. WardsAuto reports that a new Cadillac crossover riding on GM’s Theta/Lambda architecture is on the way, and will likely be a small with two-rows of seating, serving as a sportier alternative to the SRX. That same platform will also underpin the next-generation Enclave, Acadia, and Traverse.
“We will expand the portfolio,” Cadillac spokesman Dave Caldwell told WardsAuto. “But we can’t define any piece of that plan.”
