Land Rover Confirms Name of Freelander/LR2 Successor As Discovery Sport

New Compact Member of Discovery Family To Share Line with Evoque

Jun 19, 2014
Land Rover has made a protracted tease of its upcoming model strategy with numerous announcements, including the showing of the Discovery Vision Concept, and has now shared the name of successor to the Freelander/LR2. The model will be called the Discovery Sport. The model will go on sale in 2015, likely as a 2016 model. The Discovery Sport will be built at Land Rover's Halewood, England, plant, which also builds the Range Rover Evoque.
The Discovery Sport will be the first vehicle to hit showrooms from the new multi-model Discovery sub-brand. Land Rover is claiming the Discovery Sport will be "the most versatile and capable vehicle in the compact SUV segment." In terms of running gear, expect the Discovery Sport to be powered by a turbocharged I-4 from JLR's new "Hotfire" engine family, in both gasoline and diesel forms, and mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
As part of the addition of the new model to the plant, Halewood is receiving a $339 million investment and the hiring of an additional 250 employees. This will bring the Halewood plant's total workforce to 4,750, making it one of the United Kingdom's largest auto manufacturing facilities. Only Nissan's Sunderland plant is larger, with a workforce of approximately 6,000 employees.
