Industry's Largest Airbag Installed in 2015 Ford Transit 15-Passenger
Length More Than Double, Volume Nearly Triple That of Standard Side Airbag
You may look at the 110-inch height of the high-roof 2015 Ford Transit and think it would be one tippy ship when going around corners. Thanks to a number of electronic traction and stability aids and a lower center of gravity than you might think at first glance, a rollover is unlikely. But in the rare chance an ultra-long 15-passenger Ford Transit Wagon does tip over or is involved in a side-impact collision, you will be well protected by the industry's largest single airbag. The mammoth airbag is nearly 15 feet long and 3 feet tall—more than twice as long, and a foot taller than a "normal" side-curtain airbag.
Its volume of 120 liters is almost triple that of a typical passenger-car side airbag, with the Ford Fusion midsize sedan’s airbag having a volume of only 42 liters. Inflating the giant cushion requires not just one, but two of the largest inflators available. The airbag is made from a coated polyester fabric designed to hold its shape for several seconds. Ford worked with TRW Automotive, one of the leading Tier 1 automotive suppliers, in the design and engineering of the jumbo-sized airbag.
