Recalls: Toyota Highlander Airbag Software, Nissan Lug Nuts

Software May Give Incorrect Weight Ratings, Insufficient Restraint

Edward A. SanchezJun 4, 2014
New cars are safer and more technologically sophisticated than ever before. But along with that added level of sophistication comes an added level of complexity. Such is the case with the latest recall of the 2014 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid. The software for the air bag electronic control unit may not properly read the weight of the front passenger, giving a reading of 10 lb for all front passenger seat occupants, regardless of actual weight. This may result in the front seat belt tensioners giving inadequate restraint force to occupants.
The recall affects 50,000 2014 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrids. Toyota will notify owners and dealers and update the airbag software to give an accurate reading of front passenger weight. The recall is scheduled to begin mid-June 2014. Concerned owners can call Toyota at 800-331-4331 or NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
Nissan is also recalling 334 2014 Pathfinder, Rogue and Infiniti QX60 models for insufficiently-tightened lug nuts on the right side of the vehicle. Loose lug nuts could result in wheel separation, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect and tighten the lug nuts if needed. Owners can contact Nissan at 800-647-7261. The recall is expected to officially start in late June.
